Bedugul is the name of place located in mountain area encircled by the cold temperature and natural environment with beautiful panorama of Beratan Lake. Bedugul is an area in the mountain range of Central Bali. Bedugul is used to cover a large area of the central highlands of Bali around the villages of Bedugul itself, Candikuning, Pancasari, Pacung and Wanagiri (amongst others). This is an area of great natural beauty. The focus point of the area centres on the three crater lakes of Bratan (Beratan), Buyan and Tamblingan, and the nearby botanical gardens. The whole area is at an altitude of 700 meters or more, with the tallest mountain peaks above 2,000 metres, and it can be distinctly chilly here.

Getting there

Bedugul is located about 50 km north of Denpasar on a main route from South Bali to North Bali.

The area is served by regular bemos which depart from Batubulan terminal in Denpasar in the south, and from Singaraja in the north. The Perama bus company has no local office in Bedugul so if you planning go further from Bedugul, buy ticket in Kuta, Ubud or elsewhere.

A common way for visitors to appreciate this beautiful mountain region is to hire a car and driver for the day from their base in South Bali. Make sure you have a driver who knows the area well (ask questions to determine this), and fix the price for the day in advance. Depending on the class of car, expect to pay between Rp 500,000 and 600,000 including petrol. Car parking fees and any entrance charges will be extra, and it is always appreciated if you offer to buy the driver lunch.

Another option is to hire your own car and drive up here. Be sure to bring a good map though, and when in doubt, always ask locals for directions.

Getting around

If you are staying in Bedugul, hiring a motorcycle is a good idea as some of the distances between areas of interest are quite long. Your hotel will be able to arrange this and you should expect to pay from Rp 50,000 to 80,000 per day.

The physically fit will enjoy mountain biking here. There are no formal taxis but you will find plenty of drivers willing and able to transport you for a fixed price. The area is well served by local bemos, and the central gathering points for these are in and around the car park at Candikuning Market, and in the vilage of Pancasari just before you reach Lake Buyan. Be prepared for the local users to be carrying all sorts of market produce, including live chickens and other animals.

Lake Bratan Temple

Lake Bratan Temple or locally known Pura Ulun Danu  is perhaps the most photographed temple on the island after Tanah Lot, this is certainly one of the iconic images of Bali. The temple sits on the western shore of Lake Bratan and it can give the illusion of actually floating on the water.

Built in 1633, Ulun it’s mean heart and danu it’s mean lake, the temple dedicated to the Gods of lake or waters (Danu Goddes), the lake supply a lot of water to the rice field. The temple founded in 17th century by the King of Mengwi. The temple is devoted to Ida Batara Dewi Ulun Danu, goddess of the lake.  A beautiful temple in a truly stunning setting. Jatiluwih Rice Terrace

Bali Botanical Gardens (Kebun Raya Eka Karya)

One of Indonesia’s four official botanical gardens. The Garden is situated in the mountain tourist resort of Bedugul. The cool climate (average temperature 18ºC, annual rainfall 3,000 mm), clean air and beautiful scenery make this Garden popular for recreation in Bali. Students use the plant collection for extra curricular educational study. Its location not far from Lake Beratan, about 2 km. The distance is about 2 hours or 70 km from Denpasar or 40 km from Singaraja by land route. To enter the territory of Eka Karya botanical gardens, Entrance fee is Rp 7000. 8 am – 6 pm daily.

Beratan Lake

Beratan Lake is a beautiful wide lake encircled by the cool temperature and blanketed by fog especially in the evening. The water is clear and calm with beautiful Mountain as backdrop view that make you will forbear staying there. There are plenty of traditional boats standby at the lakeside which is used by fisherman and found local people are fishing to add the beauty of this place.

Lake Beratan Bedugul is located in the area, the Village Candikuning, Baturiti District, Tabanan, Bali. Being in the provincial road between Denpasar – Singaraja and situated close to the Eka Karya Botanical Garden to make this place into one of the prime tourist island of Bali. The best time to visit is from 8 am – 3 pm.

The Munduk waterfalls

The Munduk waterfall is situated at an altitude of between 800-900 meters above sea level .This water fall is located in the village Munduk, Banjar District, Buleleng regency. The distance is about 70 kilometers from Denpasar or 20 Kilometers from the tourist area of ​​Bedugul.

There are two waterfalls in this Munduk waterfall,There is Melanting Waterfall. But, people used to call them as Munduk Waterfalls. Munduk waterfall (Munduk waterfall Bali Indonesia), you will encounter the first time when you come from the direction of Denpasar / Bedugul. About 1 mile from the Ngiring Ngawedang restaurant.This Waterfall is 15 meter high and located in the coffee plantation population. From the parking lot, you have to walk as far as 246 yards to reach this waterfall. Do not forget to pay the entrance fee of IDR. 3000 near the parking lot.

The second waterfall, which Melanting waterfall is higher than Munduk waterfall. Located about 1 kilometer to the north of the first waterfall (waterfall Munduk). Parking Your car in the parking lot on the left side of the road. Next you just walk away as far as 500 meters to reach the front of the waterfall. If you bring a bike, you can bring your bike to near the waterfall. You can park your bike near the post entrance. You have to pay entrance fee of IDR 5000 (adult) and IDR 2000 (children) at the post entrance near the waterfall.

Fruit and Vegetable Traditional Market

It is a traditional market to sell the fresh vegetable and fruit that is very famous and many visited by tourist especially by local tourist. It is one of the tourist destinations in Bali presenting unique local community activities by serving the variety of agricultural product like fresh vegetables, fruit, corn, peanut, union, tomato etc. This market is opened from 7am – 6pm

Trekking in the mountains and around the lakes is very rewarding. There are regular, organised group departures from Taman Rekreasi Bedugul at Lake Bratan and the Botanical Gardens. Bedugul (Bukit Mungsu) Traditional Market

Bedugul (Bukit Mungsu) Traditional Market in Candikuning. Bedugul is the highland garden of Bali, producing lots of cool climate fruits and vegetables. In the market here you can find strawberries plus a myriad of tropical fruits, vegetables, corn and orchids. This is a great place to buy exotic spices, with mixed gift packs being especially popular. There is also an art section of the market with lots of handicrafts.

Pick your own Strawberries. There are several strawberry farms in the area. Look for signs.

Angseri hot springs

Need some privacy in a closed cabin to relax and enjoy the hot waters without any outside interference? Angseri Hot Springs is the Answer. Angseri Hot Springs nestled between lush rice paddies and small streams, precisely in Banjar Munduk Lumbang, Angseri Village, Baturiti District, Tabanan Regency. Places that used only as a traditional bathhouse by the local people, now transformed into a comfortable bathing area, with only Rp 3,000 (entrance fee) was able to enjoy the warmth of the hot spring pools.

It is only 2 hours drive from Denpasar taking the direction to go to Bedugul. If you are a little confused with the location of Angseri Hot Springs, asking some locals around may be can help you. You can also reach it coming from Penebel through Jatiluwih going north-east as well, but then it’s a bit more difficult to find. Coming closer to the destination you will see black and white signs “Air Panas”, which means Hot Spring in Bahasa Indonesia.

Eating in Bedugul

There are only a few restaurants in Bedugul but they do cover a wide price range. Opposite the road leading up to the botanical gardens, on a right hand bend, there are three small eating places serving cheap meals from 6 am to 7 pm. A good meal costs around $1.

There are good restaurants in the main hotels: The Bedugul Hotel’s restaurant by the lake serves meals costing around $7. Try the Chinese food at Pacung, especially their crab fried rice (nasi goreng kepiting). The Bali Handara’s Kamandalu Restaurant is more up market. Strawberry Hill serves tasty Indonesian favorites, soups, fresh salads, steaks, and fish. On chilly days and evenings savor a drink at Bedugul’s only bar beside a log fire. Indonesian food is available in front of Ulun Danu temple in small food stalls-not recommended for those with sensitive stomachs. Overlooking the temple and a big banyan tree is the Perama Tea House, a small restaurant by the lake. The open-air patio is a pleasant spot for a refreshing cup of tea. Try their pisang bakar Candikuning grilled banana with grated cheese on top.

Ayam Bakar Taliwang Bersaudara is just before the famous Ulun Danu temple and has a view over the temple and the lake. A favorite with locals. The spicy hot dishes from Lombok are just right for the cold weather. Order the sate or tofu if you don’t like food too spicy. $4. Jember Indah is on the higher slopes just outside Bedugul. Cheap east Javanese food and beautiful views down to the sea. Try the soto Madura for $4. Minang Saiyo, in front of Candi Kuning market, sells spicy Sumatran Padang fare.
