More than quarter of a million foreign tourists visited Bali during July, according to figures released by the Bali branch of the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) this week.

A total of 283,524 foreign tourists arrived in Indonesia via Bali in July, with 279,219 entering through Ngurah Rai International Airport, and a further 4305 people entering Bali via its seaports.

BPS head Gede Suarsa said the figures represented an 11.23-percent jump from 2010’s statistics for the same period.

“Since January, 1,587,133 people have visited Bali,” he said, adding that this represented a 10.6-percent increase against the same period in 2010.

Australia – traditionally Bali’s main tourism market – represented the largest sector for the period, with Australian citizens amounting to 27.25 percent of the total visitor numbers.

China and Japan came in second and third places respectively as sources of tourist arrivals.

Average occupancy at star-rated hotels for July, meanwhile, stood at 71.74 percent. The average stay for guests was 3.62 days.
